On Saturday night in Kansas City, Ian Garry put a halt to the momentum of Brazilian knockout artist Carlos Prates.
In typical fashion, the Irish star utilized a tactical approach that included distance management, intelligent movement and the occasional takedown to keep Prates off balance for the better part of 20 minutes. While The Fight Nerds prospect mounted a spirited rally in Round 5, it wasn’t enough to keep his UFC knockout run — and 11-fight professional winning streak — alive.
For Garry, it was a welcome return to the win column following a hard-fought loss to top 170-pound contender Shavkat Rakhmonov at UFC 310 this past December, and it keeps him in the thick of things when it comes to the welterweight championship discussion. In fact, “The Future” will be in Montreal as the backup fighter for the Belal Muhammad-Jack Della Maddalena title bout at UFC 315 on May 10. Garry also remains entrenched in Sherdog’s welterweight Top 10, moving up one spot to No. 8.
