Caleb Plant Rises to the Occasion in Decision Victory

With a promotional video playing consistently during the NFL playoffs on Fox, Caleb Plant owned the spotlight on Sunday night. To his credit, he rose to the occasion by dropping Jose Uzcategui in the second and fourth rounds en route to a unanimous 116-110, 116-110, 115-111 decision victory. With the win, Plant moved to 18-0 with 10 knockouts and became the IBF super middleweight champion of the world.

While this was a huge win for Plant especially in terms of star power, it is unclear what his future holds. The 26-year-old from Tennessee now joins Canelo Alvarez, Callum Smith and Gilberto Ramirez as belt holders in the 168-pound division, but Ramirez is leaving the division and all signs point to GGG-Canelo 3 happening in May on DAZN. Caleb Plant is on his way to becoming a star, he just needs to find the right opponents to get him there.

Rigondeaux Stops Delgado in First

First-round knockouts are generally considered the most exciting thing in boxing, so if Guillermo Rigondeaux was looking to get fans excited by stopping Giovanni Delgado in one round, then mission accomplished. However, while the overhand left knockout was pretty, the true story is that there’s no way to tell anything about either Rigondeaux’s new style or new vision for his career from this fight.

Rigondeaux was always going to be too good for Delgado, and while it was nice to see him get an early stoppage after consistent accusations of being a boring fighter, having a two-time Olympic gold medalist whose lone loss as a pro was to Lomachenko fight a guy that was 2-7 over his last nine fights was a joke.

Brandon ‘The Heartbreaker’ Figueroa Breaks Chucky Flores in 3

Brandon Figueroa is known for his dashing good looks, but it is another genetic attribute that impresses the fighters who watch him. While watching Figueroa’s fight, Jamal Herring tweeted “I’m convinced the Figueroa’s are using cheat codes... they have unlimited stamina! Flores doesn’t even have enough time to blink in there.”

Indeed, Figueroa put so much pressure on Moises “Chucky” Flores that he had broken him down by the beginning of the third round, and stopped him not long after. While critics argued that Flores was a shot fighter, or a fighter that had gotten old overnight, Figueroa’s win was still incredibly impressive. With the win, he became the mandatory opponent for WBA super bantamweight champion Daniel Roman.

Devin Haney and Ruben Villa Win on Showtime ‘ShoBox’ Card

Devin Haney took a decision win, as did Ruben Villa on Friday night’s “ShoBox” Card. Sherdog’s Mike Sloan covered this event thoroughly, so I will only add a few notes.

With Devin Haney’s own promotion hosting the event, a pretty amateur-hour mistake occurred. The ring somehow broke during a heavyweight fight, and the show needed a 14-minute delay to fix it in the middle of the fight. Immediately the Twitter jokesters came out, claiming that Devin Haney Promotions bought their ring on Ebay, or that Devin Haney’s entourage was going to gather in a circle and push the fighters into the middle of the ring like a WWE lumberjack match.

It was a bad look for Devin Haney Promotions, luckily, he was too good for Xolisani Ndongeni, or the night would have been a colossal disaster.

Jaider Parra Decisions Maidana’s Brother on Marcos’ Promotion

Which was not the case for Marcos Maidan’s brother Fabian. On Marcos Maidana’s first event as promoter, his brother and headliner Fabian “TNT” Maidana dropped a unanimous 98.5-94, 98-94.5, 97.5-95.5 decision -- not a typo, a half point scoring system was used -- to 36 year old Venezuelan Jaider Parra. This was Maidana’s first loss as a professional, and dropped his record to 16-1 with 12 knockouts.

This was a brutal loss for both Maidanas, and what effect it has on Marcos’ recent vows that he has no desire to come back to boxing will be interesting to see. One thing is for sure, his promotion just lost its biggest star and if Marcos got in better shape and tried a comeback, the promotion would have a bigger star than Fabian was ever going to be.
