UFC 227: By the Numbers

Consider this score officially settled.

T.J. Dillashaw left no doubt as to who owns the rivalry between he and former Team Alpha Male stablemate Cody Garbrandt, as he finished “No Love” for the second time in as many outings in the UFC 227 headliner at the Staples Center in Los Angeles on Saturday night. With the win, Dillashaw puts himself in position to be considered among the greatest bantamweights in UFC history -- though he still might have a score to settle with Dominick Cruz.

As brilliant as Dillashaw was, it may have been an even bigger night for Henry Cejudo. The Olympic gold medalist ended the lengthy flyweight championship reign of Demetrious Johnson in the evening’s co-headliner, edging “Mighty Mouse” in a tension-filled split-decision triumph. Cejudo could give Johnson an immediate rematch, or he could pursue more gold at 135 pounds. Either way, options appear to be plentiful for “The Messenger.”

Here is a by-the-numbers look at UFC 227, with statistics courtesy of FightMetric.com.

8: Finishes in UFC/WEC competition for Dillashaw. With his stoppage of Garbrandt, the 32-year-old moved past Urijah Faber, Renan Barao, Eddie Wineland and Rani Yahya and into sole possession of first-place all-time in that category.

2: Knockdowns landed by Dillashaw, who has floored Garbrandt a total of four times in two bouts.

28: Significant strikes by which Dillashaw outlanded Garbrandt in the short-lived encounter. Dillashaw landed 45 of 72 significant strikes, a 62 percent success rate. Garbrandt, meanwhile, landed 17 of 43, a 39 percent clip.

2: Flyweight champions in UFC history after Cejudo ended Johnson’s reign on Saturday night. Prior to that defeat, “Mighty Mouse” had defended his 125-pound belt a promotion record 11 times and was the only titlist the division had ever known.

1: Olympic gold medal winner to hold a UFC title. Cejudo won the gold medal for the United States in freestyle wrestling at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.

3: UFC champions to lose their belt via split decision. Johnson joins Johny Hendricks (vs. Robbie Lawler at UFC 181) and Dillashaw (vs. Dominick Cruz at UFC Fight Night 81). Neither Hendricks nor Dillashaw received a rematch following those defeats.

30: Significant strikes by which Johnson outlanded Cejudo (81-to 51) in the five-round affair. “Mighty Mouse” outlanded his foe 21 to 4 in round one, 15 to 11 in round two and 20 to 10 in round three. Cejudo held a 17-to-16 edge in round five, while both fighters landed nine significant strikes apiece in round four. Johnson also held a 121-to-80 advantage in total strikes.

However, several opponents have landed more takedowns against Johnson. “Mighty Mouse” has been taken down four or more times by Tim Elliott (four), Ian McCall (four) and Dominick Cruz (10) in UFC competition. The bout against Cruz was contested at 135 pounds.

13: Media scorecards, of the 22 tracked by MMADecisions.com, that awarded the co-main event to Cejudo.

3: Knockdowns landed by Pedro Munhoz in a dominant decision triumph over Brett Johns at bantamweight. That matches the UFC single-fight bantamweight record shared by Hugo Viana (“The Ultimate Fighter 16” finale) and Andre Soukhamthath (UFC Fight Night 114). All three of Munhoz’s knockdowns came in an explosive second stanza, but Johns somehow survived until the horn.

84: Significant strikes landed by Alex Perez in an abbreviated thrashing of Jose Torres at flyweight. The Team Oyama representative connected on 61 percent of his attempts (84 of 162) to earn a stoppage 3:36 into round one. By comparison, Torres landed 29 of 76 significant strikes -- a 38 percent clip -- over the same period of time.

43: Significant strikes by which Octagon newcomer Weili Zhang outlanded Danielle Taylor in their strawweight fight. Zhang outlanded her foe 27 to 9 in round one, 24 to 13 in round two and 26 to 12 in round three en route to capturing a unanimous verdict.

17: Consecutive professional victories for Zhang after losing her mixed martial arts debut in November 2013. The 28-year-old Chinese fighter has finished all but two of those triumphs by knockout, technical knockout or submission.
