Kamaru Usman continues to roll through the Ultimate Fighting Championship’s welterweight division.

Usman retained his 170-pound belt with an impressive performance at UFC 258, dispatching former teammate Gilbert Burns by third-round technical knockout in Saturday’s headliner at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. After being rocked by Burns in the opening stanza, Usman took over behind a powerful jab, ultimately flooring his foe and earning the victory with follow-up ground-and-pound 34 seconds into Round 3 for his 18th consecutive professional MMA triumph.

Here is a by-the-numbers look at UFC 258, with statistics courtesy of UFCStats.com.

13: Consecutive UFC conquest for Usman, the longest winning streak in welterweight history and tied for the second-longest in promotion history at any weight class behind only Anderson Silva (16).

4: Title fight victories for Usman, tying him with Tyron Woodley for the fourth most in the history of the welterweight division. Only Georges St. Pierre (12), Matt Hughes (nine) and Pat Miletich (five) have won more in 170-pound championship fights.

83: Significant strikes landed by Usman. Burns, meanwhile, landed 45. Usman outlanded his foe 31 to 22 in Round 1, 39 to 21 in Round 2 and 13 to 2 in Round 3.

26: Significant ground strikes for Usman. Burns failed to land a significant strike on the canvas.

2: Knockdowns landed by Usman, running his career total to seven in UFC competition.

0: Takedowns landed in three attempts by Burns. Usman has yet to spend any time on his back during his 13 Octagon appearances.

95: Total strikes landed by Alexa Grasso in a unanimous verdict over Maycee Barber in the flyweight co-main event. By comparison, Barber landed 50 total strikes.

.460: Significant striking accuracy for Grasso, who landed 38 of 81 attempts. Barber, meanwhile, often struggled to find the range, landing 40 of 152 attempts for a 26 percent success rate.

5:10: Control time for Grasso, who held her own in the clinch against Barber, who logged 3:14 of control time despite landing the only three takedowns of the bout.

2-0: Record for Grasso since moving up to flyweight. The Lobo Fight Gym representative had never won consecutive bouts in six previous UFC appearances at 115 pounds.

6: Takedowns landed in 14 attempts by Kelvin Gastelum against Ian Heinisch, a UFC best for “The Ultimate Fighter 17” winner. Gastelum halted a three-bout skid with a unanimous verdict over Heinisch in their middleweight matchup. Gastelum landed three takedowns in Round 1, one in Round 2 and two in Round 3 while logging 6:50 of control time.

53: Takedowns landed in UFC competition for Ricky Simon. Simon grounded Brian Kelleher six times in a clear-cut unanimous decision at featherweight. Saturday marked the sixth occasion Simon has landed six or more takedowns in UFC competition. The 28-year-old is 5-1 in those bouts.

1,155: Days since Julian Marquez’s last victory, a second-round submission of Darren Stewart at UFC on Fox 26 on Dec. 16, 2017. “The Cuban Missile Crisis” returned to the win column with a come-from-behind tapout of Maki Pitolo in the third round of their featured middleweight clash.

18: Fighters in UFC history to win a fight using an anaconda choke after Marquez accomplished the feat against Pitolo. Overall, 21 bouts have ended via this maneuver. Three men — Makwan Amirkhani, Phil Davis and Charles Oliveira — have earned two anaconda choke submissions in UFC competition.

34: Combined total strike advantage for Pitolo in Rounds 1 and 2. The Hawaiian fighter did much of his damage with wrestling, landing five of 11 takedowns in the contest.

25: Total strikes by which Marquez outlanded Pitolo during his furious third-round rally.

23: Significant strikes by which Anthony Hernandez outlanded Rodolfo Vieira before submitting the the former ADCC gold medalist with a guillotine choke 1:53 into Round 2.

121: UFC bouts involving ADCC champions. Vieira’s loss was the first time one of those champions had ever suffered a submission defeat in the Las Vegas-based promotion.

4: Consecutive victories for Belal Muhammad, tying him with Michael Chiesa, Muslim Salikov and James Krause for the third-longest active winning streak in the UFC’s welterweight division. Muhammad has won eight of his last nine promotional appearances.

129: Significant strikes laned by Muhammad, a career best in 12 UFC appearances. His previous best of 88 came in a split-decision win against Tim Means at UFC Fight Night 121 in November 2017.

8: Career submission triumphs among 12 professional victories for Polyana Viana, who tapped Mallory Martin with an armbar in the opening stanza of their strawweight encounter. All three of the Brazilian’s UFC victories have come by way of submission.

5: Submission attempts in 3:18 of Octagon time for Viana on Saturday night. She had four submission attempts in her previous four UFC appearances combined.

2: Knockdowns landed by Gabriel Green, both stemming from leg kicks, in a unanimous decision triumph over Phillip Rowe at welterweight. Green held a 19-to-9 advantage in significant leg strikes in the bout.

128: Total strikes for Green. By comparison, Rowe landed 48. Green also outlanded his foe by a 70-to-42 count in significant strikes. Advertisement
