Lightweights

Yancy Medeiros (9-1, 0-1 UFC) vs. Jim Miller (23-4, 12-3 UFC)

The Matchup: Miller had trouble combating the size of Pat Healy at UFC 159, eventually succumbing to a third-round rear-naked choke in their April 2013 meeting. While the bout was eventually overturned to a no-contest after Healy tested positive for marijuana, it was still somewhat surprising to see Miller so thoroughly dominated. The AMA Fight Club representative has since rebounded, however, submitting Fabricio Camoes with an armbar in the first round at UFC 168.

Medeiros showed why he is an intriguing 155-pound talent with a first-round stoppage of Yves Edwards at UFC Fight Night 31, although the result was later changed to a no-contest. The Hawaiian demonstrated a willingness to exchange with Edwards throughout before eventually clipping the veteran with an uppercut and sealing the win with a barrage of follow-up punches. Medeiros appeared vulnerable to well-timed counters from Edwards prior to the stoppage, but overall, the Hawaiian moves well on the feet and does a good job of mixing up punches and kicks.

Miller, a southpaw, is both versatile and aggressive offensively, as he is capable of landing left hands, standing elbows and leg kicks before moving into tie-up range. Medeiros is probably the better athlete, so closing the distance will be a challenge. One thing is certain: Miller will remain persistent in pressing the action no matter where the fight goes. Miller’s best course of action could be to get his man to the canvas. A Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt who is frenetic in scrambles, Miller is certainly capable of capitalizing should Medeiros make an error on the ground.

The Pick: Miller has a wealth of experience and does a good job transitioning between the various elements of MMA. Look for him to test Medeiros by constantly pushing the pace and applying pressure. Miller wins by decision or submission.
