Beating the Odds: UFC 150

In terms of setting the oddsmakers straight, Chico Camus was the big winner at UFC 150 “Henderson vs. Edgar 2” on Saturday at the Pepsi Center in Denver.

Camus was the only fighter on the 10-fight card to beat the odds, as he entered the cage as a +185 underdog to the favored Dustin Pague’s -185. The Roufusport representative won a unanimous decision in his UFC debut, earning 29-28, 29-28 and 30-27 scores from the judges.

Camus looked to be in trouble at two points in the fight. In the first round, Pague used a triangle choke position to control the action and land some elbows from the bottom. Later, he secured back mount with a tight body triangle and fished for a rear-naked choke. However, Camus spun out into top position, from which he delivered strike after strike.

In addition to his tight top game and explosiveness, Camus showcased stellar takedowns and a relentless drive. He was not content to maintain position, as he worked hard to deliver significant strikes to his opponent. Camus, a Milwaukee native who cut his teeth on the regional circuits, has won four consecutive fights.

While Camus was the only fighter to defy the oddsmakers, former lightweight champion Frankie Edgar came painfully close in the main event.

Edger dropped a controversial split decision -- judge Tony Weeks ruled 49-46 in his favor -- but many believe he left his rematch with Benson Henderson as the true victor. Henderson landed multiple leg kicks, but the challenger retaliated by catching many of them and responding with kicks, punches and takedowns of his own. Edgar was also closest to finishing the fight, as he worked for guillotines on more than one occasion.

Had the decision gone to Edgar, he would have beaten the odds as a +175 underdog. The MMA Lab’s Henderson was favored at -210.
