MacDonald Wins, Carter Loses at W-1

MONTREAL -- Jason MacDonald was triumphant in his return to Montreal on Saturday, submitting crafty veteran Vernon White in the third round of their main event at W-1 “Bad Blood.”

MacDonald, fighting in the province of Quebec for the first time since his appearance at UFC 87, was in absolute control from the opening bell. White found himself completely out of his element as the jiu-jitsu ace continually took him down and smothered any potential offense in the process. MacDonald notched his second consecutive win and 18th career submission victory when White fell prey to a triangle choke at 2:12 of the third round.

In the co-main event, John Alessio ran his winning streak to four and put himself closer to reaching his goal of fighting for the UFC when the promotion ventures to Vancouver later this summer. He scored a first-round submission win over former IFL participant Chris Clements.

It was technique versus pure aggression as the heavy-handed Clements attacked and Alessio countered, taking the fight to his comfort zone -- on the mat and away from the danger in the fists of the London, Ontario native. Once on the ground, Alessio’s superior skill came to fruition as he grabbed a guillotine at 4:24 of the first and forced Clements to tap.

Ottawa, Ontario’s Nabil Khatib narrowly escaped the Pierre Charboneau Center with a split decision over Shonie Carter.

Khatib, a fan favorite, stifled Carter’s offense early by pinning the veteran against the cage throughout the first and taking him down time and time again. Carter’s best moment came in the second when he caught Khatib with the tail-end of a head kick-spinning back fist combination that put a halt to his forward progression.

Carter opened the third throwing a plethora of kicks, but the early pace seemingly took its toll on the UFC veteran. Khatib was relentless in the third, scoring takedown after takedown. Despite the fact that Carter consistently found his way back to his feet every time, it was clear Khatib was winning the favor of the judges, who eventually scored the closely contested bout as a split decision in Khatib’s favor.

After two years away from the sport of mixed martial arts, former Shooto title contender Antonio Carvalho returned to fight in his home country for the first time since 2004. He put an end to a two-fight losing streak with a unanimous decision over Eddie Fyvie.

Carvalho, a BJJ black belt widely regarded as one of Canada’s top featherweights, showed little sign of rust as he dominated Fyvie. He took control of the center of the cage and dictated the pace standing and on the mat. Fyvie offered little in terms of offense outside of a first-round guillotine attempt, as he spent the majority of the bout defending against the Carvalho attack. In the end, Carvalho walked away with a lopsided decision by scores of 30-26, 29-27, 29-26.
