The enigmatic Lee has thrown out his anchor at the Firas Zahabi-led Tristar Gym in Montreal. The 27-year-old last competed at UFC 244, where on Nov. 2 he authored one of the year’s most grisly knockouts by wiping out Gregor Gillespie with a crushing first-round head kick. Lee has compiled a stellar 11-5 record since he joined the UFC roster a little more than six years ago, his ledger highlighted by victories over Edson Barboza, Magomed Mustafaev, Jake Matthews and “The Ultimate Fighter” Season 15 winner Michael Chiesa. “The Motown Phenom” wrestled collegiately at Grand Valley State University in Allendale, Michigan, but elected to forgo his final two years of eligibility to pursue a career in mixed martial arts.
Oliveira enters the cage on the strength of a six-fight winning streak. The Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt holds the all-time UFC record for submission wins with 13, and he has used a variety of methods to procure tapouts: four by rear-naked choke, three by anaconda choke, three by guillotine choke, one by triangle choke, one by armbar and one by calf slicer. Oliveira, who trains at a Chute Boxe affiliate in Sao Paulo, Brazil, last competed at UFC Fight Night 164 in November, when he cut down Jared Gordon with punches 86 seconds into the first round.
UFC Fight Night “Lee vs. Oliveira”—which airs live on ESPN at 6 p.m. ET/3 p.m. PT—also features a welterweight co-headliner matching 2007 Abu Dhabi Combat Club Submission Wrestling World Championships gold medalist Demian Maia with Gilbert Burns, a light heavyweight clash pitting Johnny Walker against Nikita Krylov and a pair of lightweight affairs, as Renato Carneiro battles Damir Hadzovic and Francisco Trinaldo confronts John Makdessi. ESPN will also carry the entire seven-fight undercard at 3 p.m. ET/12 p.m. PT, highlighted by a pivotal flyweight scrap between Jussier Formiga and Brandon Moreno.
